SMAQ: System - Added Value - Architecture - Quality

In St. Pölten, SMAQ has realised a spatial concept with a system, ecological and economic added value and versatile architecture: In the variable building complex, two construction methods were efficiently harmonised with each other using prefabricated reinforced concrete and timber elements. The concept enabled higher storeys and flexible construction without significant additional costs. The DELTABEAM® Composite System from Peikko played a key role here.

Smart spatial concept with added social value
The SMAQ building complex impresses with its smart, modular structures and flexible utilisation options. Different residential units, communal areas such as the roof garden as well as office and event spaces promote social interaction and communication. The concept follows the principle of ‘networking - sharing - saving resources’ and enables communal urban gardening, car sharing and the integration of kindergartens. All of this emphasises the social added value of the project.

Prefabrication meets architectural quality
The SMAQ construction system is highly economical due to its design on various levels. Thanks to well thought-out planning and a high degree of prefabrication using standardised construction methods, the construction time was reduced by around 25 %. This enabled fast, clean and sustainable construction. The high proportion of renewable raw materials meant that up to 20 % of climate-damaging emissions could be saved. In addition, deconstructability and reuse according to the ‘cradle-to-cradle’ principle were taken into account from the outset.

Simple construction based on the building block principle
Around three kilometres of DELTABEAM® Composite Beams from Peikko were used in combination with spun concrete columns and prestressed concrete hollow core slabs. The Composite Beams are compatible with all ceiling systems, are characterised by large spans and eliminate the need for complex structural changes. In conjunction with the standardised connection details, which enable quick and efficient installation, the DELTABEAM® Composite System was an essential solution for the SMAQ complex. Based on this load-bearing structure, further non-load-bearing timber walls with integrated technical building equipment could be easily included in the overall concept. This meant that one storey after another could be completed each week.

Functionally sustainable construction means that the use and function of a building can change completely during its life cycle.
